National Pet Fire Safety Day

July 15 is National Pet Fire Safety Day. Here are a few short steps to keep you and your pet safe from American Humane.

The first step to fire safety is fire prevention:

  1. Reduce open flame exposure and never leave an open flame unattended
  2. Remember to never leave an exposed cord or wire within reach of your pet
  3. Always turn off cooking or heating appliances after use

The next step is to prepare for a fire:

  1. Be prepared and always have an emergency plan (be sure to include your pet in this plan)
  2. Have a to-go bag ready with pet supplies
  3. Include a pet number decal on a window that is clearly visible
  4. Make sure your smoke detectors are properly functioning
  5. Know where your pet likes to hide when they are frightened or stressed

Lastly, in the event of a fire, here’s what you can do:

  1. If you cannot find your pet, let emergency responders know immediately so they can secure the area
  2. Remember to grab leashes and carries
  3. If your pet is still inside, make sure all doors are open and call to your pet
